CSV opens in one column? Check the separator first

Comma, semicolon, tab and pipe files can look alike while importing differently.

Check my file →

Why does this happen?

The delimiter used by the file may not match the delimiter expected by Excel. Regional settings can affect the default separator, so the same file may display differently on another computer.

Follow these steps

  1. Open the original file. The tool compares comma, semicolon, tab and pipe interpretations.
  2. If several interpretations are possible, choose the intended delimiter manually. Review the headings and column counts. Quoted delimiters remain within a cell.
  3. Export XLSX for explicit cells, or CSV for comma-separated output.

Fictional example

Code;Item;Quantity
001;Towels;12

→ 3 columns: Code | Item | Quantity

What this can and cannot do

Delimiter detection does not repair missing values or malformed quotes. Inconsistent records are reported and export is blocked until the source or settings are corrected.

Try the separator and number-risk example. It uses semicolons and should display four columns.
